Gesundheit

Henry decided that last night was the time to get a cold. Kristen and I asked him very nicely if he wouldn’t reconsider, but his reply was to sneeze at us, cough, and then smile. The little girl who he shares our nanny with is also sick so he could’ve gotten it from her, and all three of us went to our friends’ daughter’s second birthday party (where there was a gaggle of toddlers about) on Sunday, so he could’ve gotten it there, too.

It doesn’t really matter where or how or when he caught the bug, though; he just did, and the mucus tells the story. (That story is, in a nutshell, cough, cough, achoo.)

I should’ve known that he was getting sick because earlier yesterday, he refused to finish his bottle. Our child, who’s never seen a meal that he didn’t devour and then ask for more, pushed his bottle away after barely eating an ounce. I initially thought it was because of his teething, but it ended up being a little worse.

(An aside about teething. While he still hasn’t cut any yet, he is working is tongue non-stop. It’s very entertaining to see him smiling and also running his tongue all around his gums, but we also know that he’s really not enjoying it at all. We are giving him these homeopathic tablets — although who knows if they’re effective or not. To me such things likes herbs and vitamins and chanting don’t have much more than a placebo effect, but I’m not sure that such a thing works with a baby. I do know that whenever I put one in his mouth, he makes a this-is-the-worst-thing-ever face.)

Last night, to make it easier for Henry to breathe when he slept, Kristen propped up his mattress a bit (as every baby book will tell you to do), although all this did was make him slide down the incline and curve into a question-mark-type shape. He didn’t seem to mind, but we both worried that he’d get a crick in his neck, so we stretched him out and got rid of the burp clothes we used as a lift.

The funny thing about his sleeping at night is that he doesn’t seem to get upset when it’s not going well. He’ll wake up and whine a bit, but as soon as Kristen or I get over there, he’s all smiles.

Anyway, Kristen took him to the doctor’s this afternoon and all is good (or at least all is not bad). Yes, he’s stuffed up, and, yes, he has a load of wax in his ears (ew), but he doesn’t have a high fever or an ear infection. It’s just a boring cold. Which is okay with me.

I’d be more than happy if all of his subsequent illnesses and injuries are boring.
