Urdu! Swahili! Mandarin! Henry!

Henry has started to talk.

standing-tallOkay, there are no real words or anything, just strange noises, but he’s become quite the blabbermouth. His previous strange noises were one or two syllable grunts or squeals — incredibly cute, mind you, but pretty simple (we called them the pterodactyl screams). Starting late last week, however, he’s begun saying these long, drawn-out, multisyllabic utterances which get all three of us (Henry, Kristen, and me) laughing like mad.

Kristen and I are convinced he’s telling us an elaborate story of how he, with the help of his stuffed mouse, Mouf, are off saving the world from those who would deny him his bottle. It’s an epic tale where he battles naps, baths, and car seats. That is, if we could understand him.

All kidding aside, it’s really great hearing him trying to talk. It’s that next step, and pretty soon he’ll be mama and dada-ing and we’ll all get a little teary eyed.

meghanThe only problem is, like his father, he just doesn’t know when to shut up. During most of the day, this is fine, but he’s really been fighting taking naps the last few days (Saturday was a killer) because he’d much rather be awake and talking. He looks at us with his beautiful blue eyes and says (loosely translated) “Why are you forcing me to sleep when I have so much to say! Look! Look at those toes! Let me tell you about those toes! And your ear! I’d much rather pull on your ear and tell you all about it.”

Sunday was a little better and today, since I’m home from work because of the MLK holiday, he’s been even better. But, like I’ve said, we’ll gladly put up with a few sleep-deprived days for Henry. I don’t think these will be the last, either.

Yeah for talking! I always imagine that Austin is recounting the tale of his birth for anyone who will listen “First I was all warm and it was dark and then for some odd reason they ripped me out of there and it was cold and bright and they put goop on my eyes . . . “

Our Austin just started with the advanced babbling this past weekend too – but unlike Tyler, Austin only seems to do it to voice his growing displeasure with something. But, it’s so cute anyway!
