Liver and Onions
Henry visited the doctor on Monday for his 9-month check-up. Our son is long — 29 inches — and just under 20 pounds (19 lbs 6 oz to be exact), but a pin prick to his pointer finger showed that he has slightly low iron. What does this mean? Well, nothing much, except that he needs to eat more green vegetables and possibly start on meat.
Now Henry hasn’t been the biggest fan of his greens (and, really, who is), instead going for fruits and the occasional jar of sweet potato, so it’s on us to make sure he gets his green beans and peas more often. But the meat? That’s just not happening.
Baby food in general is not an appealing thing to me. Unlike our friend Melissa who tries out everything before feeding it to her daughter, I have not let any of that pureed “food” pass my lips. But, if forced, I could eat some blueberry oatmeal mush or an apple/sweet potato, but I would never, ever, under no circumstance, eat baby-food meat.
Have you ever seen it? It’s gray. Have you ever smelled it? Cat food smells better. And I can only imagine how disgusting it tastes. Cat food, people! Cat food!
So back to iron. Other than green veggies and meat, other foods that he either has eaten or likes to eat includes oatmeal and prunes (which he eats once a week to help him stay regular), so maybe we’ll just up that. Because he won’t be eating any turkey dinner out of a jar under our roof!

We tried beef with gravy this week. I warmed it just a bit- it actually tastes better than the chicken or turkey, but obviously nothing like real beef with gravy. All the meats are so bland. They smell worse than they taste. Talia didn’t mind the beef. She is her father’s daughter after all…(in case I haven’t mentioned, he orders steak 99.9% of the time when we go out and would be happy to eat it most nights).

I agree with Melissa, they must smell worse than they taste because if they were mixed with sweet potatoes, Austin ate them up. If not you can always cook up some chicken and run it through the food processor and mix it in a puree to make your own.

Mmmmm, liquid meat.
