Betty Crocker’s Godson

Henry’s approved food list has expanded in the past week. He’s eaten and enjoyed a ground turkey-pasta mixture, some provolone cheese, watermelon, and much more.

Of course, none of them can compare with his new favorite food. That would be, of course, cake.

King of the WorldNow I love cake. Kristen loves cake. Heck, everyone loves cake. But Henry adores it.

Last Friday we bought a marble pound cake at a nearby farmer’s market (yes, farmers bake, too). As Kristen and I each took a slice, Henry stared at the tasty mound of baked goodness and made monkey-like noises. So, obviously, we gave him some. Kristen pulled a small hunk out of the slice she had cut for herself, and Henry, like a baby chick hungry for some regurgitated worms from his mother (lovely image, no?), lunged forward, his mouth wide open.

In went the cake. And before he could swallow (and barely chew), Henry’s mouth was wide open again.

He could not get enough. Kristen got up and walked away, the plate of cake in hand. And Henry followed, crawling, scooting, pulling himself up just so he could get closer to the cake.

Last LobsterShe cut him a small piece for himself, and placed it on a plate in front of him. And he attacks it. The cake is everywhere. On the floor. On his face. On the plate. And, yes, even in his mouth. And to top it off, to understand that Henry has gone over the edge, he picked the up the plate, pulled it to his face, and began licking up all the crumbs. He licked the plate!

This signaled time for his bath where I had to scrub cake crumbs out of his ears, nose, and fingernails. He slept well that night — a sleep of cake contentment.

I don’t know what we’re going to do about this. I feel as if we’ve created a monster.

God help us when we give him that first taste of candy.

Yay cake! No worry about a monster – Tallen enjoys sweets but will take peas and carrots over anything. Henry discovered cake just in time for his birthday!
